Grand Master Alvin Linzy

1965: Joined the United States Navy, was stationed in Washington. D.C.. Met Bernard Gilbert, Sensei in Arlington, Virginia, in December of 1965. This was my introduction to Taiho Jutsu.

1967: Was stationed in Norfolk. Virginia and continued my studies with Bernard Gilbert Sensei until I was shipped out to Vietnam.

1968: Returned state side and was stationed in Norfolk. Virginia where I found that Bernard Clilbert, Sensei had shipped out for Vietnam. Discharged, came home, began training with an old friend, Lionel Jones Sensei.

1969: Signed up at the Chicago Judo and Karate Association located in Roseland, Illinois on Michigan Avenue. My first Sensei there was Patrick Goddard, his teacher was John Konsovick and his Sensei was John Keehan. The Director of the school was Gene Wyka.

1970: Received Shodan from Lionel Jones Sensei in Karate-Do (Gojo Ryu).

1971: Received my Yonkyu Karate-Do Goju Ryu from Wayne Washington Sensei, who I started with at the Chicago Judo and Karate Association. Wayne Washington Sensei and Ron Washington Sensei are both very close friends of mine.

1976: Met Charles Plaines Sensei in downtown Chicago, Illinois at the United States School of Law Enforcement. I began training under Charles Plaines, Sensei in Shotokan and Taiho Jutsu at the YMCA Hotel, in Chicago, Illinois where I found an old friend of mine, Bill Brown who was training there as well. I found out that Plaines, Sensei and Bernard Gilbert, Sensei knew each other very well and did a lot of training together while in and out of the military. They were both part of the Strategic Air Command (SAC) also found out that Bernard Gilbert Sensei had returned to Maryland.

1977: Returned to Maryland where I trained in Taiho Jutsu under Gilbert Sensei. Awarded my Shodan in Taiho Jutsu by Bernard Gilbert Sensei.

1978: Returned to Chicago, Illinois continued training and stayed in contact with Bernard Gilbert Sensei.

Grand Master Brad Hughes

Judan / 10th Degree Black Belt

Brad Hughes began his martial arts training at the age of 14, on the west side of Chicago under Russ Meeks Sensei and Matilda Haywood at the Dravidian School of Karate.

In 1968 he began studying Shorei Goju Karate under Preston Baker Grand Master at SearsYMCA also located on the west side of Chicago.

At 16 yeatrs of ageBrad showed maturity and a willingness to help others excel, so he was allowed to assist other students with self-defense. In 1973 Brad was promoted to First Degreee Black Belt under Preston Baker Grand Master (Sensei at that time).

As he continued to progress to second, third, and then achieving his Fourth Degree Blacl Belt in the late 70's, he began teaching classes at the Hyde Park YMCA.

A love for the Art and the desire to pass these sacred gifts to others motivated him to continue on to achieve his Fifth Degree in 1981, Sixth Degree Black Belt in 1986, he began to teach at the Midwest Community Center.

Brad was recognized as one of the top fighters in the nation in the 60's, 70's and 80's. Brad has traveled all over the city of Chicago teaching classes and giving demonstrations of the art he devoted his life to.

In 1998 he received his Seventh Degree and sought to take teaching the Martial Arts to a larger audience.

Brad acquired a teaching position as Martial Arts & Self-Defense Instructor at Malcom X College in 1999. There he felt he could show thousands of city college the life saving skills martial arts offers.

He taught several hundred students ranging from ages 4 to 83 years old. Brad has alwaysbeen the type of Instructor who can recognize the will to learn and put together a class the fits all shapes, ages, sizes and financial situations.

In 2007 he achieved his Eighth Degree Black Belt and continued to teach at Malcom X College. He was also asked to train security officers at Kates Detective Agency on the south side of Chicago where he taught Hand To Hand Combat Self-Defense, Speed Cuffing & ASP Baton Training.

In 2013 Brad retired from Malcom X College as the Instructor and is currently in his 30th year with the Chicago Board of Education as psrt of the Security Staff.

"Dedication is a trait that makes a great teacher as well as a great leader and Brad Hughes Master has shown a lifelong example of these, giving 48 years to the Martial Arts Community and 30 years to the Chicago Board of Education."

Grand Master Chuck Cowan

Dr. Obuabasa "Baba" Serikali, ND, Ph.D.

f.k.a. Grand Master Chuck Cowan

Dr. Serikali is one of the most prolific martial artists in the world. He has bee in the martial arts for over 40 years and has taught over four generations of students.

He has students throughout the United States, Africa and Switzerland. He has championed many causes in the community. He has fed the hungry, provided shelter for the sick and shut out, been a mentor and father to our youth and protector to our elders.

In 2007, Dr. Serikali was enstooled as a revered Elder by the Elders and Wisdom Keepers of the Community, inducted into the Kentucky Colonels and recognized by the Kentucky State Senate as a Distinguished Citizen in Kentucky and received a Congressional Life-time Achievement Award from the United States House of Representatives.

Dr. Serikali published a book entitled,"Tai Chi Chaun an Afriasian Guide To Health and Longevity."

He was recently promoted to 9th Dan (Kudan) in Shorei Goju-Ryu Karate by Grandmasters Preston and Otis Baker the founders of Baker's Dojo of Karate, Education and Science and The United Martial Arts Association in Chicago, Illinois.

Grand Master Eddie Baker

Grand Master / Baker's Dojo Co-Founder

Grand Master Eddie Baker began his formal study of Karate in the fall of 1968 under the instruction of his older brothers, Otis and Preston Baker.

Eddie was the first of the Baker brothers to show an interest in Karate, but he was drafted into the U.S. Military Armed Forces in June of 1965. He started his formal Karate training after 3 years of honorable service to his country, returning to his brothers in Chicago.

Eddie read and studied from Martial Arts books he acquired through mail order, long before his brothers Otis and Preston began their classes.

Master Eddie Baker has been involved with his brothers in everything that was achieved through the Baker's Martial Arts League, beginning with their first commercial school which was Baker's Dojo of Karate.

During his younger years, Eddie won many awards in the Kya Division and also in the Black Belt Division before retiring.

Eddie has always been one of the chief Instructors at Baker's Dojo and also one of the Instructors at Burnside Baptist Church presently.

Grand Master Harold "Scorpion" Burrage

Grand Master

Grand Master Harold “Scorpion” Burrage began his Martial Arts training in 1971.

He had several instructors; however, his main instructors were Master John Vinson, Masters Preston & Otis Baker, and Master Ernest Williams.

Scorpion opened a school in 1975 on the west side of Chicago, “Scorpions School of Champions”. Scorpion had several great students, but it was he himself who became a legend.

He won major tournaments such as:

Lama Nationals 1st Place Division Final A.K.A. Grand Champion “three times” Diamond Nationals 1st Place Division Final Blue Grass Nationals Grand Champion “two times” In the 70’s and 80’s the tournament world belong to Scorpion, but not an easy task

because of such great fighters as Steve Nasty Anderson, Richard Plowden, Terry Cramer, and Larry Tankson. Throughout his other achievements Scorpion is also in the Diamond National’s Black Belt Hall of Fame.

In 2003 he received his Rokudan (6th degree black belt), under Jon Vinson.

While assisting as arbitrator at the 2006 Rumble on the Lake tournament given by the Masters Preston and Otis Baker, he received his Shichidan (7th degree black belt), which was presented by his former instructors Master Ernest Williams and Master Preston Baker. GM Burrage's 8th thru 10th Degrees were conferred/awarded by Grand Master Preston Baker of the Baker's Dojo of Karate, Education & Science, by way of the

UNITED MARTIAL ARTS ASSOCIATION.

Grand Master John Triplett Jr.

I started in Martial Arts at the age of 28, I was a late bloomer they might say; as a parent I introduced my kids to the arts and after months of going to Mt. Carmel dojo watching the classes I did something crazy, I “challenged” a student and “LOST” the match. Two days later I joined the Mt. Carmel Martial Arts program with my family. After years of putting in hard work and intense training, competing on the Midwest Karate circuit along the way through Kyu ranking system.

In 2002 I was awarded my Shodan belt as I continued teaching and competing in open tournaments. In 2005 I was awarded my Nidan belt and promoted to Floor instructor at Mt. Carmel.

Today I am Chief Floor instructor at Mt. Carmel moving up the Dan ranks being a knowledgeable instructor to teach classes, perform demonstrations, working with others, continual hard work and studying. I work hard to instill lifelong gifts of personal success, confidence, discipline, self-defense, character building and leadership qualities into all my students. I teach them martial arts with its dynamic kicking and hand techniques, so the students can easily learn, and they reach their own personal goals.

Promoted to Master rank about 15 years after Shodan, I retired from competition a year or so before reaching Master level to spend more time with the students of Mt. Carmel Martial Arts program. I have been with Mt. Carmel Martial Arts program for the past 30 years learning, teaching and still learning from the best instructors. The title of Grand Master was awarded to me at Mt. Carmel Martial Arts.

Grand Master Matthew Glasper

I, Reverend Matthew J. Glasper Sr. began karate September of 1968 on Albany and Douglas Ave. under Yatergan martial arts. In 197l went to YMCA and studied under Grand Master Preston Baker. From the day I became a student of martial art, I have always studies and practiced over eight hours a day.

I studied with Grand Master Preston Baker until I was Nedan Black Belt. When I was only a 1st degree black belt, many saw me as a Master. I mastered one-hundred kicks in thirty seconds and one- hundred push-ups on one thumb.

I was introduced as a master of martial arts by Jimmie Jones. When I was 22 years old, at one- hundred and forty pounds I was No. 1 in four weight classes in four states, Illinois, Michigan, Kentucky and Ohio.

At 31, l was ranked number four in the world by Karate Illustrated Magazine and the Korea Magazine rated me number three. I won more tournaments than any other black belt fighter in the world. I made the evening news doing fifty push-ups on one thumb.

At the age of 25 I was called to preach by God. At 27 I combined Goju-ru-kenpo and Shorei Goju together and called it Holy-Te Martial Art from a christen prospective.

I am the organizer of Holy-Te Martial Arts.

From a young child Sensei Preston Baker has always told me I was going to be a leader one day.

Sensei Preston Baker, Brad Hughs and Joe Ward brought out the best in me they turned me into a unstoppable fighting machine.

I hold the record for the most kicks at one time and the fastest kicks in the world. I Matthew J. Glasper Sr. decree that I will break my own record twenty five years later and will set a new record with ten pound and fifteen pound weights tied to my ankle, under the anointing of the Holy Ghost, Reverend Matthew J. Glasper 12th degree black belt.

Grand Master Otis Baker

Grand Master

Grand Master Otis Baker is the oldest of the Baker Brothers. He appears shy, quiet, and has a broad smile. However, this should not be cause for underestimating his knowledge and abilities.

He is the second highest-ranking Sensei at Bakers Dojo. He holds an 10th Degree Black Belt; and is State Director of the United Martial Arts Association.

Master Baker began his study of Karate in June 1967 under now O'Sensei James A. Jones in Chicago, IL. He soon became one of the School's top students. He demonstrated his abilities by competing and winning at several Karate tournaments in Kumite (Fighting) and Kata (Forms).

During those days, Karate competition was little less than a full-contact event, and all the competitors were highly motivated. Karate was new in America and open Karate Tournaments were new in were World for that matter.

Master Baker, his brothers and Karate-Ka like them pioneered Sport Karate in America and particularly the Midwest.

In September 1968, Master Baker began teaching at the Henry Horner Boys Club, located in the Henry Horner Housing Projects on Chicago's West Side.

Here he was able to touch many lives, and give them an alternative to the self-destructive lifestyles and harsh environments of the housing-projects.

Teaching his philosophy that has made karate part of his life for so many years, and allowed for his personal appreciation of the Art. allowing stress, frustration or any other personal challenges to be transcended in a peaceful and productive experience giving the Karate-Ka a relaxed mind, sense of achievement and personal empowerment.

During this period, (1968-1973) Master Baker as well as his students became nationally rated competitors in fighting and kata, and were featured in Official Karate, Karate Illustrated, Black Belt, Sport Karate and other Martial Arts Magazines.

This is not only a testament to the skills of his students but also to the teaching ability of the Master.

In 1974, he and his brother's opened the oldest African-American commercial Karate School in Chicago located on 13th & Michigan.

Now located at the ZION LUTHERAN CHURCH - 356 E. 109th Street - on the northwest corner of Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. in Chicago.

Grand Master Bishop Preston Baker

Grand Master

Grand Master Preston Baker began his study of Karate in September of 1965. He was promoted Shodan (First Degree Black Belt) by a review board of Black Belts of higher rank in 1968. He then began teaching and producing some of the best students in the Midwest. He has been teaching and training for over 50years.

As an Instructor and one of the better competitors in the Midwest area, he has traveled throughout the United States and gained the respect of all instructors and competitors.

He and his brothers Otis and Eddie have instructed over 30,000 students and have directed and promoted over 86 amatuer tournaments. Grand Master Preston Baker has 286 Black Belts under his instruction, 20 ranked in Great Lakes Top 20 and 8 ranked nationally.

Grand Master Rico Paone

Grand Master

Grand Master Rico Paone was born Oct. 15, 1945 to Salvatore and Carmela Paone. His Parents and theIr 6 kids (himself included) migrated from Acerra Napole, Italy to Chicago in 1955.

His fighting career began at that young age on the streets of Chicago. In 1964 he started Akido and by 1970 he was a Black Belt in Karate and Akido.

He went on to win multiple tournaments and was crowned National Grand Champion Brown Belt Division in 1969.

Due to injuries he did not compete after 1969. However, his involvement in the martial arts community remained strong. He continued to go to events and in later years he worked to establish a Martial Arts Commission in Illinois.

He began his studies of the Martial Arts in the sixties in Chicago, Illinois under the instructions of Master Preston Baker. He then obtained his 1st Dan black belt in Shorei Goju karate in 1970.

Later he achieved receiving his black belt in Kenpo Karate under Sensei Fines Whittley Sr. over 30 years; Sensei Stan McKinney studied Hapkido Karate, Judo, Tae Kwon Do, GungFu, Wing Chung and Kung Fu.

He has taught and lived in the Uptown community for ten years and worked as a Community activist since the 1970's.

He has also operated martial arts' classes Aral Middle School for the Chicago Park District with the Board of Education.

Sensei McKinney also teaches at Prologue Alternative High School, at 640 W. Irving Park Rd... This is the 1st program that offers Credit for the students who take the martial arts class.

He also teaches at Mt. Carmel Martial Arts Academy. He has a staff of other black-belts helping him in his quest to teach 30-5L students in the Inner City area. He also did bodyguard work for Congressman Bobby Rush, some local Aldermen and other dignitaries.

Rev. Grand Master Preston Baker 9th Degree Black Belt-(Shorei Goju Karate) A world champion competitor in the early sixties throughout the USA. Master Preston competed with many well-known martial artists like Chuck Norris, Bill (Super foot) Wallace, Jim (Enter the Dragon) Kelly, Billy (Tai Bo) Blanks and many others.

On the tournament circuit he and his brother Otis were known as the Baker Boys, but one of Master Baker's best contributions was opening karate schools on the Westside of Chicago in the heart of the black communities of Lawndale, Henry Horner housing projects, many of the city's Park Districts, Boys & Girls clubs and YMCA 's. Grand Master Preston Baker has trained many students with forty plus years of consistency in the martial Arts.

Recently inducted in the International Karate Hall of Fame on November 11, 2005 and received rank certification and recognition from the World Union of Sokes in Puerto Rico, Hanshi Cynthia L. Thompson, a 9th Degree black belt in Shorei Goju Ryu Karate and a 5th Degree Black Belt in Shorin Ryu Karate began her martial arts discipline at the age of thirteen under Recently inducted in the International Karate Hall of Fame on November 11, 2005 and received rank certification and recognition from the World Union of Sokes in Puerto Rico, Hanshi Cynthia L. Thompson, a 9th Degree black belt in Shorei Goju Ryu Karate and a 5th Degree Black Belt in Shorin Ryu Karate began her martial arts discipline at the age of thirteen under Mr. Victor Hayes (Chicago) from 1979-1983 in the Shoto Kan Karate System. 1983-1984, she began studying Shorin Ryu Karate under Master James "Jaws" Butler and Shorei Goju Ryu under the tutelage of Masters Preston and Otis Baker while pursuing her academic career at Olive-Harvey College.1984-1985; she studied with John Venson at Chicago State University and advanced her martial arts career at Tankson's Karate Academy 1985-1992.

In, August 1985, where she received the rank of 1st degree Black Belt from Sensei Larry C. Tankson and Masters Preston and Otis Baker.

In 1987, Master Jo Pina (Boston) began coaching her to continue her success. Ms. Thompson began studying Tae Kwon Do under Master Pina from 1987- 1992. She would fly to Boston to continue her training every three to four months.

From 1984-1992 Cynthia was an avid competitor holding the following titles: Outstanding Martial Artist, #1 Female Kumite, #1 Weapons, #1 Forms, #1 Black Belt Female, #1 Black Belt Weapons, and #1 Kumite Competitor in the Midwest and Chicago.

#1 female competitor in several martial arts circuits such as Professional Karate Commission (PKC), American Karate Association (AKA), National Black Belt League (NBL), and NASKA.

Studying the martial arts has brought Hanshi Thompson additional state and national recognition by performing her competition Kata as talent, which resulted in her winning the following pageants: Miss Black Illinois 1987, Miss Black America 1987, Miss Colorado1989, Miss Glamour Girl 1989, Miss Windy City1999, Ms. Chicago State University 1995, and Miss Collegiate 1995.

In 1992, Hanshi Cynthia was awarded the McArthur Scholarship to study in Canterbury, England. During this time, she continued studying the martial arts while studying British Culture and Society in Canterbury England. 1996, she was awarded the McArthur Scholarship to study in Nakajo Japan. During this time, Kyoshi study and Kendo and was awarded the rank of Black Belt in Kendo from Kato Sensei.

Upon her return home, Hanshi Cynthia continued to teach the martial arts for Sensei Larry Tankson, Sensei Preston and Sensei Otis Baker. Over the years, she has shared her love for the martial arts by teaching for other martial arts schools in Chicago and Indiana, trying to encourage female participation in the martial arts.

Today, Hanshi is the founder and president of Thompson's Karate Academy Foundation, NFP (Sho Do Ryu) System where she awards academic scholarships to a graduating female/male high-school students and a non-traditional student's female/male over 35-years of age returning to college. She hosts a Karate Scholarship tournament every April to generate funds to afford the aforementioned scholarships.

Additionally, Hanshi Thompson teaches the Shorei GoJu/Sho Ryn Ryu Karate System at the South Suburban YMCA.

Master Alvin Brown

Master

Master Alvin Brown began his Martial Arts Career in 1974 at Baker's Dojo of Karate & Fitness, located at 1305 S. Michigan Ave. Chicago, Illinois. There he was guided under the direct tutelage of brothers Preston, Otis and Eddie Baker.

Upon starting into what would soon become one of his greatest and most challenging adventures of his life, he quickly discovered that he was being instructed by some of the most talented black belts in the Midwest area. Many, with backgrounds in various styles of Martial Arts, were always available and willing to share their vast knowledge with eager students. This type of dojo environment became the template for the future in Master Brown's Mind.

After receiving the rank of Shodan in 1982 through the Baker Brothers and the United Martial Arts Association, Master Brown continued under the Baker Brothers, fine tuning his art as an instructor. He joined the Bakers as an instructor at Chicago's Southside Y.M.C.A. karate program for several years.

During his Martial Arts Career, Master Brown was appointed to the Chicago Police Department in 1978. While serving in that capacity on the cities north, west and south sides, he realized the need to get involved with inner city youth. Many with no structured paths to follow seem to eventually find themselves swallowed up by the Criminal Justice System. Master Brown was successful in opening a small Karate Program at the Chicago Park District's Foster Park Field House. The program was available free of charge to all of the Gresham Community.

In January of 2004, Master Brown completed his 25th Year with the City of Chicago and retired from the Detective Division's Cold Case Homicide Unit. He relocated south to the small town of Stone Mountain, GA. which is right outside of Atlanta. There he started his commercial school of Brown's Dojo of Karate and Fitness, Inc. Since opening his doors in October of 2004, he has registered and taught over 150 students.

Master Brown continues to teach and promote the Art of Shore! Goju Ryu Karate, and the true spirit of Karate-do.

Grand Master Harold “Scorpion” Burrage began his Martial Arts training in 1971.

He had several instructors; however, his main instructors were Master John Vinson, Masters Preston & Otis Baker, and Master Ernest Williams.

Scorpion opened a school in 1975 on the west side of Chicago, “Scorpions School of Champions”. Scorpion had several great students, but it was he himself who became a legend.

He won major tournaments such as:

Lama Nationals 1st Place Division Final A.K.A. Grand Champion “three times” Diamond Nationals 1st Place Division Final Blue Grass Nationals Grand Champion “two times” In the 70’s and 80’s the tournament world belong to Scorpion, but not an easy task

because of such great fighters as Steve Nasty Anderson, Richard Plowden, Terry Cramer, and Larry Tankson. Throughout his other achievements Scorpion is also in the Diamond National’s Black Belt Hall of Fame.

In 2003 he received his Rokudan (6th degree black belt), under Jon Vinson.

While assisting as arbitrator at the 2006 Rumble on the Lake tournament given by the Masters Preston and Otis Baker, he received his Shichidan (7th degree black belt), which was presented by his former instructors Master Ernest Williams and Master Preston Baker. GM Burrage's 8th thru 10th Degrees were conferred/awarded by Grand Master Preston Baker of the Baker's Dojo of Karate, Education & Science, by way of the

UNITED MARTIAL ARTS ASSOCIATION.

Master Patton has studied the Martial Arts for over 40 years. He has taught the Arts for over 34 years. He has traveled throughout the United States in order to engage in both competition and training. He has instructed students throughout the United States and in 1978 he was appointed Chief Instructor for the

United Martial Arts Association

. Also in 1978 Master Patton was appointed State Representative for the United Martial Arts Association. In 1979 he was appointed Chief Instructor for the United States National Guards lst/178th Infantry. In 1981 he was appointed Chief Instructor of Bakers Dojo of Karate and Bodybuilding. By 1983 Master Patton had more than fifty black belts under his direct instruction, ten of which ranked in the Great Lakes top 20, and eight ranked nationally. In 1999 Master Patton was named Chief Instructor for the Worlds Martial Arts University (WMAU). On January 31,2002 Master Patton along with Sensei George H. Courts created the Panther Jui-Jitsu Club in Chicago, Illinois.

Master Keyene a.k.a. Eddie Williams

Born June 9, 1951 in Wineheim, Germany (Red Light District). Put up for adoption at birth, spent first four and a half years in a Catholic orphanage.

I Began training in the martial arts between 1954 and 1955 under Master Sargent Stanley C. Williams (my adopted father) and the head instructor at West Point Miltary Academey for the Military Police. Trained under this my first Sensei in CQC (close quarter combat) which was a mix of Kano Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, White Tiger, Chin Na, and so on.

After living all over Europe, my farther retired from the U.S. Army and my family moved to Louisville, Kentucky where he became a Homicide Detective for the Jefferson County Police Force for 22 years.

My mother and father both supported my love of the martial arts and drumming. I was a professional

I began training with H.W. Nashi (India) in Transendental Medatation and Kundalini Za Zen. This is when I became very involved in the "Dead Arts." Anicent martial arts that were forgotten or abandoned by its students because of the esoteric and physical challenges. I began teaching for Master Nashi in my first dojo on September 9th, 1966 in Valley Station, Kentucky.

While exploring other arts (Wing Chun, Chi Kung, Maui Thai) in the early 70's, I began training under

Master G.C. Cowan at Cowan's Kwanza Mandinka Judo and Karate Academy. This was the home of the world famous Raheem Family. Under Master Cowan's guidence opened up Cowan's Mandinka Karate Academy South in Valley Village, Kentucky. This school evolved into the Sho Chiku Bai Martial Arts Academy with four locations.

In 1980, I began training under Master Ji Yong Song in Judakwon Taekwondo for U.S. Olympic Team, earned 1st degree shodan from the World Taekwondo Federation. I moved to Lexington, Kentucky to teach Japanese Shito Ryu Karatedo, Shotokan, Kobudo, Shurei Goju, Goju, Jujitsu, and Judo while training 12 hours a day 7 days a week in Taekwondo. I earned an alternate fighter position on the United States Olympic Taekwondo Demo Team.

Fought AAU Karate Nationals from 1980 to 1984, won the gold medal with the United States Marine Corp KarateTeam.

After the Olympics started the 10th Tribe of Valhalla-Warriorz USA World Karate Team. Undeated National Champions and Undisputed World Champions in everything.

Shihan Paul "Deno" Thomas, Godan (fth Degree Black Belt) was bom May 14, 1944. Shihan "Deno" Thomas began his Martial Arts career in 1964. In 1968 he began training at JJ Karate Association, studying Shorei-Goju under the instruction of Master Jimmy Jones the founding father of the Universal Karate Syslenr (UKS). .- In competition he has,won many awards, plaques and trophies and has become well known for his fighting and self-defense abilities.

In June of 1979 Master Thomas was promoted to Shod|an (1st Degree BJack Belt) by Master Jimmy Jones.

In 1981, he joined the staffof Tankson's Martial Aits

Academy, LTD. under the ownership of Shihan Larry Tankson.

Shihan "Deno" was promoted to Nidan (2nd Degree Black Belt) on November 20, 1982 by Shihan Larry Tankson.

My Name is, Theodore Nurse. I started boxing in 1962 at "Stateway Gardens Center" under the training of, Mr. Johnson and Mr. Ames, both of whom were great coaches and trainers. I later trained at "Windy City Gym" on Chicago's south side.

During the most negative time in my life, I became a street fighter, for little or no money and, lots of time in jail or the emergency room of some hospital. Needless to say it was always at those times that the words of coach Johnson meaning became quite clear "The more you sweat, The less you bleed". Training is the key to success.

In 1974, I joined Olympic Karate School located at Washington and Dearborn St. I studied under Sensei Knudson whom always referred to me as " The Meanest Thing in Green." I studied Hwangdo Judo, under Sensei Dennis and Sensei Maixine Perdue, at the 51st street YMCA.

In 1975 I became a Black Dragon under Sifu Russell Brown.

In the middle of the 1980's I became more committed to my career and less time training . Though I was no longer competing for a while I kept up with current events. In my years of absence I raised a family and worked the Chicago Transit Authority, where I retired from after 30 years of service.

In 2005 I ran into Sensei/Pastor Baker at a grocery store. Though I had known the Bakers since the 1970s had never studied under them. We talked for a while about the past and present. I was surprised to learn that not only was he still teaching at Baker's Dojo, but that he had also become a Lutheran Pastor. I told him that not only had I retired from CTA, but that I also had custody of my 4 grandsons, at which time he invited us to attend church and Baker's Dojo.

In 2005 me and my 4 grandsons became members of Zion Lutheran Church under Pastor Baker, and also members of Baker's Dojo under the teaching and training of Sensei Preston and Otis Baker where the Bakers have worn off the rust and painted me with character. Sensei Bettie Bj Thomas Vaughn

Sensei Bettie "BJ" Thomas Vaughn

Sensei Bettie (BJ Thomas) Vaughan began her martial arts career in 1971 at the Dravidian School of Self Defense and Karate under Sensei Russ Meeks, and her instructor Larry Tankson.

BJ had studied Tae Kwon Do under Master Kim of Chicago before becoming a student of Preston Baker. Under his and his brother Otis Baker tutelage^ honed her martial arts skills.

Traveling and competing throughout the Midwest with the Baker brothers, BJ became a notable competitor, being noted in martial arts magazines such as Black Belt, Official Karate, and Karate Illustrated.

In January 1977, BJ was awarded Shodan in Shorei Goju Ryu by the Bakers, thus becoming their first female black belt. BJ became the only female member of the Windy City Pros (full contact professional karate team).

In April 1977 she joined the military and was assigned to Munich Germany. During her stint in the military, she taught karate, and competed while traveling throughout Germany.

In 1985 while stationed in Bremerhaven, Germany BJ taught self defense and karate classes to children of active duty military and DOD civilians.

Today BJ trains and lives in San Antonio, Texas.

IT WAS PEOPLE LIKE MASTER JONES, JIM KONCEVIC, ALGENE CARAULIA AND SOME OTHER GREAT NAMES THAT MADE THE MIDWEST WHAT IT IS TODAY.

THEY BELIVED IN TEACHING ALL THE ASPECTS OF THE ART. NOT JUST KUMITE, LIKE MOST SCHOOLS DO TODAY. JIMMIE TURNED OUT SOME GREAT STUDENT'S AND SOME GREAT TEACHERS. Sensei Kevin Boens Sr.

Sensei Kevin A. Boens Sr. interest in martial arts started at the young age of five. He faithfully watched kung-fu movies on Samarui Sundays, and began informal training with his great-uncle. In 2009 Sensei Kevin met Grand Master LeJohn "Lil John" Smith Jr. who encouraged him to visit Baker’s Dojo where Grand Master’s Preston & Otis Baker would become his primary instructors for formal training.

Sensei Boens has practiced traditional Shorei Goju-Ryu since 2009 along with his entire family, wife Tanya, son’s Kevin & Jeremiah and daughter’s Destiny and Heaven. Sensei Boens was promoted to Shodan (First Degree Black Belt) in 2015. He is now the Review Advisor at Baker’s Dojo of Karate, Education and Science in Chicago, IL. His responsibilities include: Making sure Baker's Dojo is properly insured, making sure that all instructors are qualified according to Baker's Dojo's Policies and to oversee all ranking of members of Baker's Dojo.

Sensei Kevin is well known for his quality of teaching not only the physical aspect of the art but the Mental and Spiritual aspects as well. He prides himself on making sure that his karate pupils are in tuned with their Mind, Body and Spirit as well as having the historical knowledge of Karate. His mission is to make sure each karate pupil will be able to fully understand the art and how to properly and when to appropriately use it.

Sensei Boens Sr. has been a fan of the Legendary Bruce Lee from the first time he saw him and because of this he has self-taught himself how to use the nunchakus which is his weapon of choice. He is also accomplished in the tournament circuit, having competed and won in several competitions citywide.

Sensei Boens Sr. appreciates the martial arts tradition. Learning from Sensei Mike Brown how to execute and analyze Katas from various styles of Karate in order to ascertain their lessons and their truth to be applied in every area of life. Also learning Self-Defense for real life situations under the leadership of Master Jesse Manning Jr.

Sensei Boens Sr. is on a quest to becoming a Grand Master one day in hopes to carry on the legacy of Grand Masters Preston & Otis Baker whom he respects and thanks for his opportunity to fulfill a childhood dream which was to become a well-known member of the Martial Arts family, a dream that he shares with his own family. Master Leonard Jones

Master

Leonard J. Jones is a man who has earned the love, esteem, and respect from everyone who has had the pleasure of associating with him.

He was born in Widener, Arkansas to Amos and Ora Lee Jones and is the youngest of eight children. A child of the South during the 50's and 60s, Leonard excelled in high school football and served as a defensive linebacker for Anna M. Strong High School in Marianna Arkansas. His love of sports led him to Northeastern Illinois University where he majored in Recreation Sports Studies.

Wedding bells rang in 1968 when Leonard married his high school classmate Doris Shears Daniels. Two children, Leonard Carlos and Linette Carol, soon followed. The family settled in Chicago, Illinois, as Leonard Sr. began a 41-year career with CPC International/Best Foods/ACH Foods, where, he was employed as a Machine Operator. He has helped to produce many popular products such as Mazola Corn Oil and Argo Corn Starch.

Leonard's life-long love of sports has been a continuing thread throughout his life. In 1981 he began coaching inner city little league with the OBEY baseball program.

He also intensively studied the martial arts and has attained the rank of 4th-degree black belt in karate. He has established and operated karate schools located in churches for over 25 years, sharing his skills and enthusiasm with youth across the city. Many of these children were homeless and resided in shelters and on the streets. He is the founder and head instructor of the Burnside Martial Arts Center.

Leonard and Doris instilled in their children a family promise: "We will always help those who want to help themselves and will encourage others to want to help themselves." To that end, he has been Doris' #1 supporter in her many non-profit/social service positions, initiatives, and projects. They have opened their home to many relatives and others to give them the support and encouragement they needed to become self-reliant. He is active in the Burnside Community Baptist Church as an usher. (Brother-in-Law Rev. Albert Shears is the pastor) and a proud resident of the Beverly /Morgan Park Community.

As Leonard retires and enters the next phase of his life, the constants remain: He is a deeply committed husband (43 years!), father, God father and Child of God. His work teaching karate to children and volunteering in the community will continue and thrive.

Sensei Michael Brown

Sensei

Sensei Mike Brown's interest in martial arts started at the young age of four. He faithfully watched kung-fu movies on Samarui Sundays, and began informal training with his uncle. At the age of ten, Sensei Mike began formal training under the tutelage of Sensei Maxine Purdue and her late husband Sensei Dennis Purdue at the YWCA on 62nd & Drexel Ave. in Chicago. For a thirteen year period he took a hiatus from the martial arts scene yet continued to read and practice.

Brown has practiced traditional Shorei Goju-Ryu since 2005. He resumed his formal training with Grand Masters Preston and Otis Baker and in 2011 they promoted him to Nidan (Second Degree Black Belt). He is the chief floor instructor at Baker's Dojo of Karate, Education, and Science in Chicago, IL.

Sensei Mike is well known for his quality of teaching, explosive kicking abilities, and mastery of Japanese, Okinawan and Chinese weapons. A few of the weapons he is skilled in are the nunchakus, sai, tonfas, spear, and Chinese broadswords. He is also accomplished in the tournament circuit, having competed and won in many competitions citywide and in the Midwest.

Sensei Brown appreciates martial arts tradition. He studies, executes and analyzes Katas from various styles of Karate in order to ascertain their lessons and their truth to be applied in every area of life.

Sensei Mike's vision for the dojo and his karate pupils is to carry on the Shorei Goju Ryu system, produce future champions, and to instill discipline, honor, and integrity.

Currently, Sensei Brown is cross-training, studying Akiyama Yoshin-Ryu Jujitsu with Master Ken Keith the Founder and Head Instructor of the Takeo-Ryu Goshin Jitsu System in Chicago. Sensei Brown understands that in order to be prepared for every possibility in a combat situation, the martial artist must be proficient in both standing and ground fighting with the ability to incorporate nage wazas (throwing techniques) and ukemi wazas (breakfalling techniques), especially when dealing with multiple attackers. He is pursuing the "Gentle Art" from the ground up to earn a Black Belt and to become an AFJ (American Federation of Jujitsu) Certified Black Belt Instructor.

Sensei Preston Baker Jr.

I Preston Baker Jr., began Karate, competeing in tournaments for Kata and Kumite at the early age of 3 years old.

I became a super-winner in both Kata and Kumite at the age of 10 years. I was recognized by Tournament Promoters as, "The Kid To Watch."

As I followed my father (Preston Sr.,) and my two uncles, Otis and Eddie to tournaments through out the Midwest, Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin, Indiana, Kentucky and all over Illinois, I developed a reputation of being a Martial Arts SuperStar.

My biggest challenge in competition in the dojo, was my sister Abaa Baker. I could beat most everyone in my age division, but my sister Abaa, I didn't want to hurt her.

My REAL competition in the dojo and on the tournament circuit was my cousin, Ronald Baker, Otis Baker's oldest son who was just a few minths younger than me.

When I was eighteen, Ronald and I were tested and promoted to Shodan (First Degree Black Belt) in 1982.

In 1994, I was tested and promoted to Sandan (Third Degree Black Belt).

It was said of me in Karate Illustrated Magazine, " A Tremnedous Fighter with clean, effective techniques and A Spirit That Just Won't Quit."

My superstar future in the martial arts came to a quit halt, when the Doctors diagnosed me with muscular dystropy. The disease put a stop to my future in Karate, but not to my spirit. I will always have a great love and deep appreciation for all those who train and practice the martial arts for self-improvement, in the true spirit of the humble warrior.

By the time the funeral started there was standing room only. Both sides of the church were full and

many people had beautiful words to say as they shared their fondest memories of experineces with Preston Jr. There was a great number of martial artists spanning (3) generations who attended the service. Literally, (3) out of any (5) people you spoke to were martial artists.

His uncle, Min. Otis Baker Grand Master read the scriptures and spoke about Preston Jr's conversion in faith and encouraged anyone present who had not done so, to consider faith for their lives.

My martial arts journey began at the Southside YMCA when I was six years old. My parents were always looking for positive and

constructive ways for me to grow as a child, so they enrolled me in the class. The classes led by Master David Jackson and Master

Keith Reed provided a strong foundation that introduced the basics and the discipline that are essential in the arts.

After years of training under Master Jackson and Master Reed and competed in multiple tournaments, my instructors decided Bakers’

Dojo would be the best place for my continued growth. After becoming a part of Baker’s Dojo, I became a two times national

champion. After 12 years in the arts under GM Otis Baker, GM Preston Baker and GM Jesse Manning, I grew to achieve the rank of

Shodan (1st Degree Black Belt) in December 2015. At 19 years old,my journey in the Dan system began and I traveled through the

Midwest to compete and I continued to grow.

I left the Southside YMCA as a student and later returned to carryon the legacy as an instructor. From of all of my years of training

Sensei Enoch Benson IV began his studies of martial arts in 1970 with Master Carlos Liverston, in Chicago's Altgeld Garden's community Center.

At age 21, he studied under the awesome and dynamic instructions of Grand Masters Preston and Otis Baker of the Baker's Dojo of Karate, Body Builders, and Poses, located on 1300 S. Michigan Ave, Chicago IL.

Sensei Benson became light heavy weight champion of IL when he fought for that title in 1983 as a 1st Degree Brown Belt (Ikkyu) at the Arie Crown Center in Chicago. He was then promoted to 1st Degree Black Belt (Shodan) in 1985 by the Baker brothers and the U. M. A. A.

Throughout his demanding career, Sensei Benson had been contributing to the Martial Arts Community when the opportunity presents itself. He never lost sight of his zeal, will, and love for the sport, rather it was in providing paramedic skills, for martial arts tournaments hosted by Grand Masters Preston/Otis Baker, Cynthia Thompson, Larry Tankson, Shorty Milles, Sensei's Stan McKinney, Jerry Weise and others, or judging at others tournaments. Benson teaches at Baker's dojo whenever time allows.

Sensei Benson loves to work kata as well as participate in Kumite, but most of all, his passion is instructing our children in our Martial Arts community and future.

Sifu Robert Rockymore Jr. was born on October 16, 1962 in Chicago Illinois. In Chinese astrology, Robert was born in the year of the Tiger. Robert's uncle Thomas introduced him to the martial arts when he was around eight years old. Robert has a long history of working with high risk youth through the martial arts. In 1983, Robert obtained his certification to become an instructor. Shortly after, Robert began working with high risk youth in the Englewood community in 1984.

In 1987, Robert entered into the Tae Kwon Do 10th U.S.A national tournament at the ranking of a black belt and came in 2nd place. Later in 1991, Robert worked to help lower the high crime rates in the Englewood inner city community. Today, Robert continues to work with a number of social services throughout the city such as Operation Link-Up, Ashburn Elementary School, Calvary Community Complex, The United Methodist church and a host of other community organizations, and institutions. Soke-Dai Akeweye N. Tirhakah Bey

Soke-Dai Akeweya Nicobi Tirhakah Bey, also known as Master John Sanders Jr. has been studying and teaching the martial arts for 60 years.

He is a Supreme Grand Master, having trained and promoted many Black Belts, Masterts and Grand Masters. across the country.

Master John is a Veteran of the U.S. Korean Conflict and served in the U.S. Airforce as a Air Policeman from 1952-1956.

He began his study of Martial Arts while in Korea in 1952. He Studied Tang Soo Do under Master Kim Soo Yung (a ROK - Republic of Korea Airforce Airman).

In 1953 he traveled to Hung Chow, China and studied Wu Shu under Professor Ching I Ming who was a professional photographer and also the teacher of Professor William Kwai Sun Chow. Returning home form the war, Master John began teaching in Altus Airforce Base in Oklahoma, Shaw airforce base in Sumte, rSouth Carolina & Pope Airforce base in Fort Bragg in North Carolina.

In 1976 Master John founded the Black Nationalist organization called, "Kenyatta Chung Fa Wa Su Martial Arts Kwoon (Dojo)." There he taught a culmination of several styles of Martial Arts.

He was the Regional Director of the National Karate League in Louisville, Kentucky by the then President Supreme Grand Master Jimmy Jones, and tested by Grand Master Preston Baker in the 1970's.

He is the Mfundishi of the Ancient Kemetic Culture Institute in Louisville, Kentucky and the National Grand Mufti of the Moorish American National Government.

A Moorish American Patriot of 20 years.

Today, as National Grand Mufti of the M.A.N.G. he has developed a sacred system of Psychic Seff-Defense and is teaching a very select group of Men (Thinkers) to help secure the Moorish American Nation.

Samson Cornette

Shichidan / 7th Degree Black Belt · UMAA Lifetime Member · Louisville, Kentucky

Samson Cornette began his martial arts training in 1990, studying Shorei-Ryu and Shorei Goju-Ryu Karate under Sensei William Schuch. Sensei Schuch was a student and black belt of Harold “Scorpion” Burrage, connecting Cornette to the Baker Brothers martial arts lineage.

For more than 35 years, Cornette has continued to study, practice, and teach traditional karate while operating dojos and martial arts clubs throughout the greater Kentucky area. His martial arts experience extends beyond Shorei Goju-Ryu, with instructor rankings in other disciplines including Filipino Eskrima. He is also an experienced Yoga and Tai Chi instructor.

Outside the dojo, Cornette is a published author, private-sector security expert, and a specialist in interview and interrogation. He currently lives and teaches in Louisville, Kentucky, continuing a martial arts tradition built upon technical skill, disciplined study, and the preservation of lineage.
